On the far side of Diamond Head away from Waikiki the quiet community of Kahala is a residential neighborhood of single family homes, public schools, and the Kahala Mall with its 100 plus shops and multiple restaurants. The area stretches from the slopes of Diamond Head along Kahala Avenue next to the ocean until it reaches the Kahala Resort and the Waialae Country Club, home of the professional golf tournament, the Sony Open in Hawaii. The flat farm land of the area—rare on Oahu—made it ideal for building luxury homes. One of the most famous homes in the neighborhood was built by Doris Duke and today is known as “The Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design.” Kahala is bordered on the mauka (mountain) side by the Lunalilo Freeway making it a very convenient location. If peace, quiet, gentle waves, and luxury living are the goal, then this is the neighborhood.
