The neighborhood of Kakaʻako began more than two centuries ago as fishponds and salt flats. It was the area between the business center that would later become Honolulu and the beach playground that would become Waikiki. It went through an industrial phase with the creation of the Honolulu Iron Works and then attracted many commercial and retail businesses. Today it is in the process of a complete transformation into high rise housing from cozy studio apartments to world-class luxury condominiums, many with stunning ocean views. These are rising in a planned community that already includes retails shops, eating and entertainment centers, and inviting parks to encourage relaxing outdoors just steps away from Ala Moana Shopping Center and Park.
